Episode 7:Crazy Stuff Goin’ Down!
We’re at Purdue again this week, and it’s starting to become like home to the crew. This week we’ll catch up on some series review in past episodes. We’ve got two new reviews for you as well, Elfen Lied and Ergo Proxy. Two shows, two horns, 12 vectors, and a girl that looks like the singer from Evanescence…but a little bit hotter. Sounds weird, well, it really is. But it’s sooo worth it. And Tyler would like to apologize, he knows now that her name is “Real” not “Lil.”

I’ve listened to a few of your podcasts…and its becoming apparent to me that you guys download all of your episodes.
Its because of people like you that Geneon closed its doors in America. You claim to like Rozen Maiden, but probably didn’t even buy the DVD’s (which Geneon produced, which you would probably know if you bought the series). Now, because of people like you guys, Geneon is no longer around and great series like: Black Lagoon, Rozen Maiden, Karin and Hellsing Ultimate will never be released here again.
On a positive note, I like your podcasts. But please, at least use your “power over the internet” to condone pirating anime. It would be a shame to lose Viz, ADV and Funimation next.
Hey Dom, thanks for the comment.
Recently the eternal Subs vs. Dubs holy war has taken a couple of interesting turns. Specifically I’m referring to the explicit request, and the fallout therefrom, made by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the American government, as brought to the attention of most of the community by way of this ANN news item.
For what little it’s worth, we at Ani-one do buy lots of anime on DVD. Now, not all of that is R1 DVDs, because we don’t watch dubs (for example the Hong-Kong version of ‘5 Centimeters Per Second’ is more than sufficient and much cheaper). Do we buy DVDs for every anime we watch? No honestly we don’t do that either.
But aside from fansubs, how are you supposed to know what’s worth buying? Do you buy DVDs of every series you watch on television? I like House MD, but so far I haven’t bought any of the DVD seasons available. I also like Firefly though, and I did buy the DVD box set of that.
I know several people in the American anime industry, and while I absolutely want to see them do well, I simply can’t afford to buy the box set of every anime that comes down the pipe. Nor am I willing to wait eight months for them to slap on a dub track I will never listen to.
I realize that on Japanese television these series are funded through advertisements that are largely relevant only to a Japanese audience, so including the commercials in the downloaded version wouldn’t help anybody out. So I concede that a direct payment option is the best solution.
As soon as an animation studio provides a direct-payment option for DRM-free downloadable anime, either raw or subbed, I will gladly subscribe to that service.
We’ll try to talk about this more in an upcoming episode, mean time please write back, and let us know how you’d improve the situation.
Gyar! When’s the next episode coming out, guys?
Y’know, not to be impatient and rude or anything.
